Riders can use electric unicycles just about anywhere, but I see them most often used in big cities where car traffic is a problem.

How Does an Electric Unicycle Work?

An electric unicycle, also known as an e-unicycle, EUC, or even a self-balancing unicycle, is a self-balancing single-wheel transportation device designed for personal usage, but how does it work?

It is similar to electric skateboards, hoverboards, Onehweel boards, and electric scooters, because of the electric motor and a rechargeable battery, but those devices have two or more wheels, so riding electric unicycles is unique.

With the electric unicycle, the rider stands on two foot pads (also known as the peddles) with the large wheel positioned between their lower legs.

Once turned on, and the rider mounts the electric unicycle, the electric motor propels the electric unicycle to speeds over 30 mph, and the advanced control features built into the electric unicycle control your speed as well as stopping and starting.

The main feature that differentiates the electric unicycle from other electric vehicles (EVs) is that to ride the one-wheel electric unicycle, you need to be on top and standing on the foot pads, which are situated on each side of the wheel, and you need to be in motion to maintain balance and to keep you and the electric unicycle upright. With only one wheel, you can’t stand on it for long without it moving.

The electric unicycle is a self-balancing vehicle. The self-balancing process means the electric unicycle wants to balance itself, not side to side, but from front to back. This is to prevent you from leaning backward too much or leaning forward too much and then wiping out.

For balance, electric unicycles have a gyroscope that senses the direction and angle of the electric unicycle while in motion. This gyroscope provides better balance, better stability, and is one of the most important safety features.

The built-in self-balancing process of the gyroscope is an advanced technology sometimes found on other electric vehicles, but the gyroscope on electric unicycles does more than just help you with better balance.

Regulate Speed, Stop and Start

If you have never seen an electric unicycle work, you might be wondering how you start, stop, and regulate speed on it, after all, this powerful electric unicycle can go very fast so you will need to know how to stop, speed up and slow down.

The range of electric unicycles varies depending on the model. Larger motorized unicycles will have larger batteries and, therefore, an increased range, and maybe increases speed. the size of the electric motor can also determine the range.

The average range of electric unicycles is around 45 miles. However, some electric unicycles may go less than 25 miles, while others will go a whopping 128 miles. The actual range of any electric unicycle will depend on your speed.

As an example, the more you ride at full speed the less range you will get. This is normal with any electric vehicle I have driven. Driving at moderate to slow speeds will give you a lot more range, and the ranges claimed by the manufacturers are often based on riding at mid-speeds.

Who is the Electric Unicycle for?

An electric unicycle is a vehicle for personal use, commuting, or just for fun, some even use them for sport and racing. Therefore electric unicycles are recommended for anyone over 13 years old.

Although the electric unicycle is recommended for riders over 13, I have seen kids as young as 8 years old that were able to ride an electric unicycle. Doing so should be under adult supervision and with full safety gear.

I have also heard of adults over 70 years old that ride electric unicycles. Whether you are really young, much older, or somewhere in between, it’s best to know your own abilities and limits, and if you know or think that you have balance issues, then do not ride a motorized unicycle.

Are Electric Unicycles Safe?

A motorized unicycle is comfortable, and some have a good suspension system that improves the unicycle’s safety.

Comfort, suspension, the gyroscope, and any other safety features that are built-in doesn’t mean that rider should ignore safe riding practices, which includes wearing proper safety gear.

In general, electric unicycles are safe to ride, but just like any personal transportation device, even a bicycle, or a toy like a hoverboard, accidents can and do occur.

To be safe on a motorized unicycle, it’s always best to ride at the speed of your ability and skill. Ride slower until you get more skilled.

Also, avoid riding in crowded areas such as buy sidewalks, parks, or streets, also void riding in traffic or between and around vehicles, and avoid rough terrain, at least until you get good enough for the trails.

Regardless of your skill level, you should also always wear safety gear.

Safety Gear For Unicycles

Safety gear should always be worn when riding a motorized unicycle. The number one piece of safety gear is a good helmet.

Knee pads, wrist pads, and elbow pads are also a smart idea.

Wearing proper shoes is also recommended. We don’t recommend sandals or dress shoes.

The lifespan of the battery should be 4 to 5 years. However, the lifespan of the battery will depend on how often you use and charge the battery and also how well you take care of it. For example, if you leave your battery dead for months, it can ruin the battery and could negatively affect the range, speed, and power. The brand, design, battery life, engine power, and sales location contribute to the wide price gap in electric unicycles. If you are going for upgraded EUC versions, be ready to spend your money.

Is it easy to ride?

Electric unicycles might seem like a great deal of work for newbies and non-professionals at first, and although the learning curve to ride an electric unicycle isn’t as quick and easy as other electric vehicles, you are in for an adventure of a lifetime.

Balancing on an electric unicycle is the first thing you need before being able to ride. We highly recommend starting slowly and getting on one while holding on to a railing or something.

You can start by placing your dominant foot on the pedal while tilting that knee and the unicycle inwards, and try adjusting the weight on the other leg to avoid tipping over.

The electric unicycle is motion-sensitive, so try shifting your weight or applying pressure in the direction you wish to go. However, it is recommended that you always stand up straight and not lean forward or lean backward while riding.

Leaning forward or leaning backward goes against the Gyroscope and could even cause an accident.

In all you do, consider your safety first. Always ride with the safety gear and other necessary equipment to minimize the impact of any damage. Never push beyond your limits; consistent practice pays off in the end.
